Wonder: Pages 3-53
Welcome to Ms. Troy's 6th grade advising blog. We will begin reading the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio On September 29th. Each week we will discuss the book in class, using the blog posts we generate during the week as a jumping-off point. I am very excited to be your advising teacher this year and I'm sure we will have a lot to talk about. Let me know if you have any questions!
Please answer all parts of one of the questions below in a well thought out paragraph using complete sentences and proper grammar by next Thursday's advising class (October 6). Also, visit one of the blogs of the other advising groups and respond to a classmate's response.
Remember, you can comment as much as you want on any of the blogs. We're looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the book, just make sure you are being respectful to your fellow classmates. Different views and opinions are what makes for good conversation and debate. Also, if you're having trouble getting onto any websites, it is your responsibility to let your teacher know before the date the assignment is due, so try to post earlier in the week rather than later.
Question #1:
On page 48 Mr. Browne reveals his September precept, “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.” What do you think this means to Auggie? What does this mean to you?
Question #2:August has never gone to school before the 5th grade. Why was going to school an issue for him? Do you think he should have gone when he was younger? How would you feel if you were in Auggie’s position?

Question #1:
Question #2:August has never gone to school before the 5th grade. Why was going to school an issue for him? Do you think he should have gone when he was younger? How would you feel if you were in Auggie’s position?
I think going to school was an issue for him because he had never gone to school before, and a lot of the kids at his school might stare and laugh at his face. I also think that Auggie should have gone to school before 5th grade (in kindergarten) because during that time, all of the other students are also new, so he might not be teased so much and he might make a lot of new friends. If I was in Auggie's position, I would be very scared because he had never gone to school and he is meeting a lot of new people.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense with the information provided in the book. Great Job!
DeleteThat is true and I agree with what you are saying,I went to a new school every year in the lower level so I really know how he is feeling.
DeleteYou bring up a good point that going to school earlier would have gotten Auggie used to the environment and would have gotten the other kids used to him. Do you think he would have had the same problems if he started going at a younger age or would he be dealing with the same issues he is now, just at an earlier time?
DeleteI think your answer was really good. I like how you said how you would have felt in Auggie's position.
DeleteGreat job!
Going to school was a problem for August because of his medical position. In the story, it states,"People think I haven't gone to school because of the way I look, but it's not that. It's because of all the surgeries I've had." But I agree with Mariana. If I looked like August, I wouldn't want to go to a school where kids could whisper and stare at me all day long.
ReplyDeleteAugust should have gone to school when he was younger so it would make school easier to understand.
DeleteGoing to school was an issue for August because he had never experienced going to school before, and because of the way he looks. August's face deformity was an issue for him because people could tease him or ignore him because of the way he looks, and that would make it hard for August to want to go back to school the next morning.
DeleteI think that August should have gone to school when he was younger to help him build up his confidence, and get used to being around other children.
If I were in August's position, I would be nervous and excited at the same time. I would be nervous because I would be worried about what the other students think about me. I would be excited because I had never been to school before, and I would be interested to find out what it's like to go to school.
I agree with that, because I also think that August should have gone to school when he was younger because all of the other kids would also be new, and he would not be teased as much because of his face.
DeleteThis novel is written in the first-person perspective and based on Auggie's perceptions and feelings. He seems to believe that the medical issues were a big part of his being home-schooled for most of his life. Do you believe that he was actually using that as an excuse to avoid having contact with people in school who could potentially make fun of him?
DeleteGoing to school is an issue for August because he has never gone to school before, and he isn't used to how harshly people can judge you sometimes, when your as different as August. I think if August didn't have so many surgeries, he should have gone to school earlier because the people in school would accept him more if they were more used to him, like Christopher, Zack and Alex.
ReplyDeleteDo you believe that Auggie is not used to how harshly people can judge him, or is he just so used to it that he is afraid of it happening more often now that he is involved with a school full of people who could potentially make fun of him?
DeleteThis group I can tell puts a ton of effort which shows a lot and shows that you are all good readers. I can agree with all of yours and I think that all of you took your time and did not scam throughout get it done with all because it was a homework assignment. I love the effort and I also hope you are enjoying this amazing book as much as I do:)
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to hear you like the book. It is one of my favorites. Thank you for writing such a positive comment about our blog :)
DeleteGoing to school was a problem for Auggie because he knows nothing about how to act at school, along with the fact that he has several medical condition's which could cause bullying and other problems that Auggie might not enjoy. Also, i'd imagine that Auggie would not know how to act in school which might affect his grade as well as his popularity among his classmates.
