Wonder: Pages 105-154

Thank you everyone. Your Wonder comments are very thoughtful and well-written. I'd love to see page numbers when you are citing evidence from the book, though. Remember, answering all parts of one of the questions on this blog is only half of the weekly assignment. You are also expected to comment on a response from at least one of your peers from either this blog or another group's blog. I've been seeing a lot of great responses so far. Let's keep it up!

Question #1:

Jack seems to struggle with how he feels about August. What are the positive and negative reasons he gives about being ex- friends with him? Have you ever felt pressured to stop being friends with someone? How did you feel? What might you say to Jack if he came to you for advice about deciding to be ex-friends with Auggie? What virtues (justice, fortitude, prudence, and temperance) does Jack show throughout this section of the book?

Question #2:

What does Veronica mean when she says, "sometimes you don't have to mean to hurt someone to hurt someone" on page 137? Have you ever hurt someone without meaning to or done/said something that you wished you could take back? Did you try to fix the situation afterward? If you were in Veronica's shoes, do you think you would you have acted in a different way in the situation that Jack described (first seeing Auggie) and how so?

Comments

  1. I think veronica means that if you say something to someone and you don't mean to hurt them, it might still hurt them anyways. I remember when I accidentally hurt someone before and I felt horrible. Afterwards I tried to fix the situation and it didn't do a thing. After that, I wished I had never said it in the first place. If I was veronica I don't really know what I would have done, because i'm not veronica.

    1. Great job so far Sam. Thank you for answering all parts of question 2. I would like to clarify the final part of the question, though. If you were babysitting Jack and his brother that day, how do you think you might have responded to the situation? Might it have been similarly to Veronica or would you have acted completely different? Try imagining yourself in that scenario and reflect on what the possibilities could be.

  2. It is easy to take something that has been said in the wrong way. Once I said something that was meant to be a compliment but the person who I was talking to thought of it as an offensive statement. I tried to talk to them afterwards, but they simply ignored me.

If I were in Veronica's shoes at that particular time, I would probably react to it calmly, unlike Veronica did. "Jack! We have to go! said Veronica." (pg. 136) I would instead make up something to make sure that August's feeling's were not hurt. For example, If I looked at my watch and pretended that Jack had a doctors appointment etc. I think that would be a white lie, as the reason for it was to make August wouldn't be offended.

    1. Wonderful response, Lily. I love that you answered all parts of the question and cited from the book. I'm sorry to hear that person would not let you try to apologize and explain. We are all only human and making mistakes is a part of life. We can only work to learn from those mistakes and become better people from our experiences. Keep up the great work!

  3. On page 137, Veronica says "sometimes you don't have to mean to hurt someone to hurt someone." I think this quote means that sometimes you do an action or say something that is not meant to hurt anyone, but it can end up hurting someone.

I have once said a joke to someone that was meant to be funny, but the person took the joke seriously and was hurt by it. It ended up being okay because as soon as I got the chance, I talked to that person and told them that I was fooling around and for them to not take it seriously.

Honestly, if I were in Veronica's shoes, I don't think I would have acted any different than the way I did - even though it was rude. This is because on page 137 it says, "It was bad that we did that... I was scared for what Jamie was going to say, you know? I didn't want him to say anything that would hurt the little boy's feelings." This quote shows that since Jamie was going to say something that was going to hurt Auggie's feelings, Veronica had to say something quickly - without thinking - to avoid Jamie hurting Auggie's feelings. If I were Veronica at that moment, I would have said the same thing. I would have said the same thing because even though it was rude to leave at an instant like that, I wasn't thinking about the impact of what I was going to say, I was just trying to avoid the impact of what Jamie was going to say.

  4. Jack struggles with how he feels about august. He can be popular, or he could do the right thing and be a nice person. throughout the majority of the book,he has been a good kid, and been nice to August. On Halloween, in changes when some popular boys were talking trash behind August's back about him. I have never, thankfully been in a situation where I felt pressured to stop being friend with someone. I imagine, though, it would be a tough position. It would be hard, but if you are ever in a situation between doing the right thing, and being popular, choose the right thing.

If I could talk to jack and give him some advice, I would tell him that the right thing to do is help August. Jack doesn't need to be best friends with August, or even hang out with him as much as he does, but he definitely shouldn't making comments like "If I looked as messed up as August, I would no joke kill myself." If jack doesn't want to be best friends with august, that's okay, but he definitely shouldn't be saying stuff like that.

Jack shows justice while handling this situation (for the most part). For the beginning of the book, he does. When he has the choice between popularity, doing the right thing, he chooses the wrong one. If Jack wakes up and comes to his senses, an apology and talk with August would be the right thing to do.

  5. Jack likes being friends with August, but Julian keeps on annoying him. I have felt that way when my some of my friends have been acting spazzy and annoying, but they stop when I ask them. Veronica meant you can accidently hurt someones feelings even if you dont want to.

  6. Jack likes being friends with August because he likes August, but he won't have any other friends as long as he is friends with August, so he doesn't know what to do. 1)Have more friends 2)Have a better friend. I would tell him to be friends with August because I have read the book and I know how it ends.
Jack shows pretty much all 5 virtues. Temperance because he sicks it out with August and Summer, Justice because he tries to make up for what he said about August, etc. etc. etc.
