Wonder: Pages 205-255

Welcome back to sixth grade advising. This week we will read pages 205-255 of Wonder. I am very impressed by most people's effort in this blogging activity. Keep up the great work! Also, don't forget to comment on or respond to another student's post. Please answer all parts of one of the questions below in at least one well developed paragraph. This is our penultimate week of Wonder.

Question #1:

Why do you think Miranda and Via’s relationship changed over the summer? Miranda considers Auggie to be like a little brother. Do you have a friend or know someone you're not related to but who you consider to be part of your family? Why do you think Miranda gave up her part as Emily to Via on the opening night of the play? Please use evidence from the text to support your answers.

Question #2:

How does being kind help someone overcome challenges? Support your answer with at least two examples from the book and/or your own life. If you are using examples from the book, remember to use quotations and cite page numbers. When using examples from your own life, you do not have to use people's names but be as specific as you can about the actions that support your answer.

  1. I think that Miranda and Via's relationship changed over the summer because they had not seen each in a while. Also, I think that this happened because in the book Miranda says that "She wasn't serious like Via. " (pg. 238) This explains that Via would probably like to be around more serious people. Miranda probably had a more serious look before she died her hair pink, and that may have given a sign to Via that the new Miranda is not the Miranda she knew.

Sadly, I do not have a friend that I am not related to that consider to be part of my family. However, that would be a wonderful thing to have.

Miranda gave up her part as Emily to Via because she felt bad for telling people that she had a brother that was "deformed.' Another reason I think that she did this was because she still feels a kind of friendliness towards Via. On page 240, Miranda says that "Then I saw Via's name on the sign-up sheet and just wrote my name down on the list." This shows that Miranda still appreciates Via even though she makes fun of her..

    1. Nice job Lily!

I loved how you fully answered all parts of the question and used evidence from the text to support your answer. I agree with you when you say that Miranda and Via's relationship over the summer changed because they hadn't seen each other in such a long time. I also agree with you when you say that part of the reason why Miranda gave her part as Emily to Via is because she still feels a friendship towards Via.

I can't wait to see more of your responses! Keep up the good work!

  2. I think that Miranda and Via’s relationship over the summer changed. I think this because after Miranda completely changed her personality and appearance as she explains on page 237, she completely ignored Via for the rest of the summer. As a result, when Miranda went back to school, her relationship with Via drifted away. For instance, on page 239 it says, “I hardly saw Via at school this year, and when I did it was awkward.” Then it says, “We never really argued: we just drifted away.” These quotes show that as a result of Miranda changing her appearance and completely ignoring Via over the summer, her relationship with Via slowly dissolved away when she went back to school.

Although I do not have someone that I consider to be part of my family, I do have something that I consider to be part of my family. I consider my best friend’s dog to be part of my family. This is because I am always at my friend’s house, and I am always playing with her dog. Because of this, I love her dog so much that I consider him part of my own family.

I think that Miranda gave up her part in the play to Via because a, there was no point in performing if no one she knew would be watching her, and b, because she wanted to do something nice for Via to make up for their loss of friendship. For example, on page 243 it says, “I was going to be extraordinary, but there would be no one there to see.” Another important section of evidence is stated on pages 241 - 242 when Miranda explains how and why she misses her friendship with Via. These two parts of evidence from the text show that Miranda gave up her part to Via because they show that since Miranda didn’t have anyone to see her in the play anyways, and she wanted to make up for her friendship with Via, she did something nice for Via by giving her the part in the play.

    1. Fantastic response Artemisia! Your evidence supports your ideas well and you have good insight into why Miranda gave up her spot in the play to Via. It is clear that you put a lot of thought into your response. Great job!

  3. Miranda and Via's relationship changed a lot over the summer. Miranda may have thought that since Via and her had never made any plans over the summer, Via didn't want to be friends with Via.

When Miranda was "sick",we known that there, of course, was a possibility, she wasn't. Miranda may have given up the spotlight to her "ex-friend" Via because she wishes that they still hung out.

Though I have never felt like any of my best friends are like siblings to me, this may be because a lot of my friends don't have younger siblings. Miranda and Via were friends ever since they were little, and Miranda had become so close with Auggie. Before the play auditions started, Miranda had saved Auggie, And even Via, because they were going to do a play on a young boy with a facial deformity.

    2. Great response Brian! I agree that although Miranda changed over the summer and she and Via drifted apart, Miranda still cares for Via and her family. Her giving up her part in the play to Via provided her a way to start closing the gap that had formed between them.

The only critiques I would give you would be to remind you to proofread your post before you submit it. In your first paragraph you wrote that "Via didn't want to be friends with Via." I'm also going to be nitpicky about grammar: "Via and her had never made plans..." should be Via and she... I don't know if Mrs. Martin has gone over pronoun usage with you all yet, so don't worry about the grammar for now, but always proofread :)

  4. Being kind helps you face your obstacles because if you are having a friend problem or need to be accepted into a friend group then you have to be nice then they will like you and they will invite you or try to become your friend for example I needed to be accepted into this thing on the bus called the bus government and my friend weren't kind and I was kind to the president so he accepted me I didn't even have to run that is why being kind can help you overcome your obstacles.

    1. Vignesh, you were very brave in trying to answer question #2. It is an open ended question and in some ways, more difficult to answer than #1. I agree that being kind does help a person to make friends and be accepted into a group. I really liked your example of the bus government, though I would have liked a little more explanation about what that is, how people weren't being kind and what obstacles you had to overcome to be a part of it. Also, the directions for this question asked for two examples from either life or the book. Make sure that you are reading carefully so you can get full credit for your work.

  5. I think that Miranda had changed over the summer because of something called a life of a teenager. Most of the time teenagers will change. They just get older and change. Another reason is that everyone wants to be popular so, Miranda just wanted more attention, but it did not go well. I do also had friend in kindergarden, her name is Zeba. When I was young I felt really close to her and I still do, but it gets different when you are older. Like Miranda when she got older she just was not friends with Via anymore. I think that Miranda gave up her part in the play because she felt that Via would be a lot better at it than her. I feel that Miranda wanted to pay Via back for changing all of the sudden.
