Wonder: Pages 54-104
Hello again everyone in Ms. Troy's Advising! This week we will be reading Wonder pages 54-104. Please answer one of the two posted questions and comment on another classmate's post.
Your blog responses will be part of your ELA grade for this term so remember to keep putting effort into your thoughts and your writing. I love what I'm seeing so far, and I know we can help each other create great conversations about this book.
Question #1:
Why could Via see Auggie in two ways, the way she always saw him and the way that other people see him, after she got back from her four week trip to her grandmother's? Have you ever had an experience where your perception or outlook changed, even though you may not have wanted or expected it to? How did you react to that change?
Question #2:
Do you think Via is right in her thoughts that her family needs to make Auggie "grow up?" Why or why not? She says on page 90 that they've "spent so much time trying to make August think he's normal that he actually thinks he is normal. And the problem is, he's not." What might Auggie say to Via if she told him this? How might you respond to Via if she were having that conversation with you?

I LOVED THIS PART SO MUCH!!! I hope this group has a BLAST reading this Part.
ReplyDeleteI sure enjoyed it!!!
DeleteIt was awesome!!! :)
DeleteIf Via had told me that everyone spent so much time trying to make me think I'm normal that I actually think I am normal I would probably get mad at her and avoid her for a while.
ReplyDeleteWould you act the same if Via was just a friend who was venting about her brother to you? Would you agree with her or would you try to defend Auggie? Why?
DeleteI would probably agree with her because if she was a nice person, I would want to be her friend.
DeleteVia could see Auggie in two different ways: the way she had always seen him and the way other people see him. I think Via could see Auggie in two different ways because first of all, when Via got back from her trip, she had not seen Auggie in a long time, and she was not used to having someone with a facial deformity living around her all the time. I also think that Via could see Auggie in two different ways because when Via was with Gran, Auggie had to have a big jaw surgery done, which changed his appearance to what Via was not used to seeing all the time.
ReplyDeleteI have had an experience where my perception or outlook of something changed, even though I did not want it to. I responded to this change by first being a little mad, (because I did not want my perception to change) but then, I learned to deal with my new perception.
I agree with you, because in the book it says that when she came back from Montauk, Auggie came to say hello and Via saw him the way all the other people saw him.
DeleteGreat response, Artemisia! I love that you used examples from the text and answered all parts of the question. Keep up the fantastic effort!
DeleteI really liked all of your details. I think you did a nice job answering the question. I am interested to see more of your answers. Good job.
DeleteHey Artemisia I agree with your emotions on the book and I also know that the way you write your comments is a way I can tell that you patiently read the book and don't just scam through.
DeleteGreat job Artemisia! I love all of the detail you put into your paragraph.
ReplyDeleteI think Via is wrong about the fact that Auggie has to grow up, because he still needs a lot of help from his family because of his face and because he is starting at a new school and doesn't have many friends. If Via told this to Auggie, I think he would be angry with her because he also probably feels like he needs all the extra help he can get. If Via was having this conversation with me, I would try to convince her to help Auggie more.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely. I like how you said if you had a conversation with Via what would you do. Good gob.
DeleteI think I agree with you, but in some ways, I don't. The first thing I disagree with you is the fact that August DOESN'T need to grow up. I know that for right now, since he is only a kid, he can be pampered by Via and his parents, but is he going to be like this when he's 15? 16? His parents won't be as fast and bright s they are now, and they won't have time to pamper him. When WILL he grow up? I feel like he should as soon as his parents let him. He's got to be ready for reality. Back when Julian made fun of him, he ran away and cried instead of just blocking it out. What if someone else teased him like that? Will he just run away from all of his problems?
DeleteThe thing that I agree with you is, that if Via said this to August, he WOULD be very upset, because, no matter how much I personally disagree, August is who he is, and being the character that August is, he would be really upset, so I do agree with you there.
Via could see August in 2 ways after a four week trip with her grandmother because she hadn't seen him for a while, and he had had a surgery during her trip, so he looked slightly different, so she saw him the way other people him.
ReplyDeleteNicely written Ben i like the detail and you used evidence in the story to fit what you wrote.
DeleteBen, you gave good information, but it was a little short so I could quite get a summary out it. Good job.
DeleteI think you did a really good job with your word choice. Good job.
DeleteI understood everything you wrote!! You did a great job too!
DeleteIf August was told that he is not normal, he would probably be pretty upset. I know I would if one day someone walked up to me and told me I wasn't normal. If Auggie always gets babied, when he reaches higher grades such as high school, let alone college, he will not always have his mom or dad, or Via, right by his side. When or if Via tells August, he will probably be surprised. After thinking it over, he hopefully realize why Via had said that and that she wasn't trying to be mean. If Via had said that to me, I would probably wonder why. Hopefully, I could think it over and realize why, and that she was just trying to help me.
ReplyDeleteI think that is a great paragraph Brian and totally
Deleteagree with your idea, for example how you explained Auggie gets babied and how you mentioned high school and college. That was great Brian.
I think you did a really nice job with answering the question. I liked how you said how you would think if Via said that to you.Good job.
DeleteThanks guys!
DeleteI agree Brian the boy, If august does get babied all his life up until high school/collage he probably wont have such a great future I guess you could say he needs to man up.
DeleteYes, that has happened to me before when I was in 5th grade i didn't care about my grades at all and i didn't try at all but suddenly over the summer in some way i got motivated to care about my grades in 6th grade and actually study. I reacted to the change by asking my mom to join me in math classes outside of school.
ReplyDeleteGood job Vig Da Pig!
DeleteThat is great to hear. I love it when there's a positive shift in someone's perception. Keep up the great effort!
DeleteDo you think that Via's perception change was for the better or did it hurt her relationship with her brother? Why was it she saw him in the two ways she describes in the book?
Via saw August two different ways, because when she came home, he had changed a lot, but he was still a little bit the same.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had a experience like that. I think Via is not right because August is fine just the way he is. If Via told that to to me, I would have just replied "I don't care". (:
I'm happy to hear you support Auggie. He can't control the way he looks but can control his actions. Remember to use specific examples and evidence from the text to support your answers. Keep up the good work!
DeleteI think Vi is right about her thoughts that Auggie should "grow up" because if he doesn't grow up then the kids at his school will never take him seriously and he will never be friends with anyone besides the ones he already has.
ReplyDeleteSorry I couldn't get this in sooner. I was having computer problems up until now but I think I fixed them!
I'm glad to hear you've figured out your posting problem.
DeleteDo you think that people will judge Auggie by his actions or his looks, especially when first meeting him? Could the way he acts be a defense mechanism for the way he has been treated by people outside his family his entire life?
I agree with your opinion, and if you need help with your computer feel free to ask me at home :D
