Because of Mr. Terupt: Pages 1-47

Welcome back to the blog, 6th grade advising! Over the next two months we will be reading the book Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea. In this first section of the book we are introduced to the seven main characters (Peter, Jessica, Luke, Alexia, Jeffrey, Danielle, and Anna) and their teacher, Mr. Terupt.

Which of these characters would you like to have as a friend, and why?

Remember to use specific evidence from the text to explain your answer in a concise and focused 6-8 sentence paragraph. Once you have posted your response, be sure to comment on at least two posts from your fellow 6th graders in any blog on the Padlet. Don't forget to mention a BFCCPS character trait (justice, fortitude, prudence, or temperance) and use proper spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.

Have fun blogging! I can't wait to read your thoughts!

  1. I would be friends with Jessica because she is the new girl, and she seems like a nice person who shows justice. For example, when all the kids were out at recess, she noticed Danielle was sitting alone, and there was no one talking or playing with her. Because of this, Jessica decided to go and talk to Danielle, despite the fact that Alexia told her that Danielle said mean things about Jessica behind her back. Jessica chose not to believe this and to fins out herself, so she went to go talk to Danielle. In the end, it all payed off because Jessica found out that Danielle was actually a really nice person.

    1. Hello Mariana,
I also agree with you. It would be nice to make a new student feel comfortable in school. Although, Jessica is a new student she is still brave enough to help other students who feel alone.
Good work! This assignment shows that you have been putting good effort in it. I hope you keep up the good work.

    2. Hi Mariana,

I agree that you would be friends with Jessica. You are nice so you would probably help Jessica feel confident in her first few weeks of school.

      Nice job!

  2. If I had to have a character from “Because of Mr. Terupt” as one of my friends, I would have to choose Anna. This is not only because Anna is a nice and kind girl, but also because she shows temperance in all of her actions. For example, on page 35 it says, “I’ve never been in Alexia’s class, but I can tell she’s mean. All the girls listen to her, though. Katie, Emily, Heather, Natalie—all of them. Not me. I stay away from her.” This shows that Anna understands that Alexia is not the best person to be around, and she stays away from her, showing that she is temperate in her actions, making her a good friend.

Another reason why I would choose Anna as my friend is because as I mentioned before, Anna is also nice and kind. For instance, on page 35 it says, “I don’t know Danielle that well. She’s never been in my class before. She seems nice. I like her.” This quote shows that Anna is not only respectful in general to people, but she is also respectful to Danielle. This shows that Anna is kind because Danielle is a character that most of the other girls dislike for no reason, but Anna is different and is actually giving Danielle a chance by getting to know her better.

One last reason why I would choose Anna as my friend is because she shows prudence. For example, on page 36 she says, “If you love someone, you don’t quit on something just because they make a mistake.” This is just one of Anna’s quotes that shows how she really has good judgement and common sense, making her a great friend to have.

    2. Hello Artemisia,

I also agree with why you would choose Anna. Although she is going through many things and people think she is a bad influence, she is not a bad person and is really nice! With the amount of evidence, BFCCPS character traits and reasons you gave to support your claim, this truly shows the great deal of understanding and effort you are putting into this assignment. Keep up the good work!

    3. Hello Artemisia,
I agree with you Anna would be a good friend First of all as you explained she is trying to stay away from bad people she is probably scared that she is going to become mean so that is why she would not be hanging out with Alexia I chose to comment on this response one because when I was scrolling through the comments your post seemed to stand out because you took all the time and effort to write a post that has 3 paragraphs! You went over the requirement which is an amazing thing to do! Your wrote this post with so much details and evidence you backed up everything you said with evidence keep up the good work I hope to read more of your responses.

    4. Hello Artemisia,

I agree that you would be good friends with Anna. I like that you used a lot of evidence and clearly stated the character traits she showed. You stated that Anna is trying to stay away from the mean girls, and you and her are both nice people, so you guys would have eachother.

      Great Job!

    5. Hello Artemisia!

After reading your comment, I can honestly imagine you and Anna sitting at a lunch table, laughing. Great Job! You answered all parts of the question, and your response was phenomenal. Keep up the great work! ;)

  3. I think I would be friends with Danielle who cares if she is chubby in the book she says that she has no friends. So I would want to become her friend. If someone says a mean comment to Danielle then I can stand up for here maybe I could make it so people would stop being mean to her. And I saw in the book I noticed that she was very patient with Elle when she made a big deal about her plant. Maybe other people don't want to be friends with her because of her looks but who cares about what she looks like you need to judge someone by the heart and if you judge Danielle by the heart then everyone would want to be friends with her.

  4. Hello everyone,

If I had to be friends with anyone from the book "Because of Mr. Terupt", I would choose Luke. Although he doesn't like all the things I am in to like basketball, skiing, and football, but I know he is very smart and academically gifted. He wouldn't get me into any trouble (like Peter), and he wouldn't get in any trouble either. Luke always tries his hardest, and I try to. For example, he spent hours working with chemicals to make a food substance for his plant. Although it didn't work, Luke demonstrated fortitude, because he never gave up, and he kept working. Luke also shows temperance. He maintains self control and never hits, pushes, or punches anyone.

    Thanks

  5. Hello everyone,

I would like to start off by saying that I am so glad we are reading "Because of Mr. Terupt"! I love this book already, and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the story!

Now, to answer the prompt. Out of the 7 main characters from "Because of Mr. Terupt", I would be friends with Danielle. I say this because we have a lot of things in common. Danielle is very self-conscious, and is constantly caring about what her peers think of her. On pages 46-47 it says: “Grandma says something’s going on with Lexie that we don’t know about, and that it's best not to worry about being her friend. But I did worry. What was the truth?”

Not only that, but Danielle shows that she is fair and reasonable. Another synonym for fair and reasonable is called justice. Even though Danielle is not a fan of Lexie (or her jokes), on page 18, Danielle realizes that it is unfair and not very nice to wish that Alexia was fat, even if her Grandma meant it as a joke. As quoted from the story, “If you made her fat, that would be alright by me.” I elbowed Grandma.” Danielle is a kind person, which proves that appearances are not always reliable.

Also, Danielle wants to be Anna’s friend, even though Anna's past is obscure. She thinks that Anna is a great person, even though her mother and grandmother may think otherwise. On page 45 she states: “Your grandmother’s right, Danielle. That girl comes from a bad family, Mom said. She’ll be a bad influence.” Also on page 45, Danielle says, “I just listened, but I couldn’t help thinking about the Anna I knew. She didn’t seem bad at all. In fact, I already liked her. I wanted her to be my friend.” She realizes it isn’t fair that Anna should be ridiculed for her mother’s actions. When she realizes this, she shows justice.

Danielle looks at the bigger picture. Even though Anna comes from a bad family, she thinks that Anna is a thoughtful girl . When I want a friend, I look for someone who is caring and thoughtful. Danielle shows multiple examples of justice, which is a good character trait to have. Someone who shows justice is someone who really cares about you. Danielle shows justice often, and is be an example of my ideal friend.

    1. Hi Lily,

Amazing response! I agree with you on how Danielle demonstrates justice in multiple ways, and because of this, she makes a good friend. I enjoyed the fact that you took the time to write a well-thought-out response with multiple paragraphs, evidence from the text to support your reasoning, and even a BFCCPS character trait! Overall, you did a great job. Keep up the good work!

    2. Wow Lily, this comment is amazing! It kept my attention. This response has great detail and your thoughts on those pages is thorough. I love the last paragraph about how Danielle looks at the bigger picture, that was very thoughtful. Your describing is so clear about your character traits and what traits are "ideal" for you.

  6. I think that Luke would be a good friend, because he is very smart!!! I like to build things and (duh) read!!! And he doesn't seem to mind if someone is weird or not. That would be good because my freinds sometimes act odd.
