  1. My favorite character in the book was Danielle. The first reason is because of all the perseverance shown throughout the book she has shown it when Alexia was making fun of her she persevered through the jokes. Another reason she is my favorite character is because she wasn’t a snitch although she didn’t stand up for herself she didn’t want to get Alexia in trouble so she never told on her. The third reason she was my favorite character is because she is very disciplined in the book she never got in trouble throughout the year.

The fourth reason is because she is very religious because in the book she does a lot of prayers to god. She made a prayer to have Mr. Terupt feel better “Dear God, It’s Danielle. I really need you down here. Mr. Terupt needs you” (Page 142). Danielle must also be a hard worker also known as industry because she lives at a farm she must plant crops with her family she probably also has a lot of experience with the outdoors.

Danielle grew a lot probably physically and mentally. Danielle at the beginning of the year didn’t like school even though they had good teachers as she said “School wasn’t so great. My teacher seemed pretty nice, and he could be funny, too.” (Page 16). She also hated school because she had no friends as she says, “But none of that matters when you don’t have friends.” (Page 16). At the beginning of the year she also had a negative attitude towards how she is chubby or fat. After the unfortunate tragedy, she has changed she grew.

If you see in the chapters with Danielle she never says anything about how fat she is. She has positive attitude over how she is chubby by not mentioning it at all. She also grew to like school before she hated it but now she likes it even after the tragedy. She also now has friends Jessica and Anna who kindly did not judge her by how she looks but by her heart. She also knows how to stand up for herself and not go off crying when someone picks on her.

Danielle has a lot of Forgiveness after all that Alexia has done to her all the mean jokes. She forgave Alexia at the hospital easily. Daniele has a lot of Kindness because when Jessica asked her to be on her team to take out Peter she joined probably because she didn’t want Jessica to feel bad. She also has a little Magnanimity because one of the things that describe Magnanimity is a willingness to face danger. She faced danger by joining Jessica’s team since she might get in trouble. Finally she is very caring she cared for Mr. Terupt when he was in comma she wanted to go to the hospital with Anna to see him. She also burst into tears several times.

  2. My favorite character from “Because of Mr. Terupt” would probably be Danielle. She is my favorite because she never gave up. For example, when her mother and grandmother tell her to stay away from Anna and that Anna was a bad influence, Danielle tried to find the light in Anna, which was very evident. “I’ve been asking God to help me get my family to see that Terri and Anna are good people.” (Page 236) In the end, because of Danielle’s perseverance, her mother thought better of Anna, or at least it seems like it, by this quote: “I know my mom can’t think Terri’s all bad if she’s praying with us―” (Page 236) Danielle is loyal to people who are nice to her.

Danielle changed in multiple ways over her 5th grade year. I think the most obvious change is that she figured out to stand up for herself. “Just stop it! I exploded. Why do you always have to be so mean? You’re nice in the room with them. Why do you have to be mean now?” (Page 71) Even though she used to go along with whatever Alexia said, you can see that parts of the “new” Danielle are shining when she decides to show Alexia who’s boss.

Danielle shows mostly fortitude. If we try to go back to what I said earlier, “she never gave up.” From that portion of the sentence, you can infer that she shows fortitude. The definition of fortitude, according to Oxford Dictionaries, is: courage in pain or adversity. I think that this describes Danielle perfectly. She tries to find a friend in Anna, even though she is told not to. She stands up to one of her “friends” and she isn’t scared to go to the hospital to visit Mr. Terupt.

  3. I think the character who has changed the most is Anna. As said in the book, Anna used to be extremely shy. She would never talk to anyone, or raise her hand to answer a question. However, after Mr. Terupt came, he began to purposely ask Anna more questions. For example, in the very beginning of the book, Mr. Terupt asked Anna about her thoughts on the topic, or ask her for the answer to a question, as said in the book on page 19 - "I didn't say much in school, and I never raised my hand. That would have been an easy way for people to notice me, and I didn't want to be noticed. People can be real mean...". Then, on page 20, it says, "Mr. Terupt turned out to be different. He noticed me on the first day. It didn't matter that I wasn't raising my hand because he would say, 'Anna, get ready. I'm calling on you next'...".

After this, Anna slowly began to become more confident. She became friends with Danielle and Jessica, and even asked them over to her house for a playdate, even though she was a "bad influence" on Danielle's family. When this happened, Anna's confidence really started to blossom. She asked to pray with Danielle even when Danielle told her that her family disapproved of Anna's family, just because Anna's mom was only twenty seven years old. Anna even asked her mom, Terri, about the whole incident with Charlie and how she made a dent in his front car door.

Anna has obviously changed a great amount over the course of the school year. She felt much more confident in herself, and wasn't afraid to stand up for herself. She was also starting to make an impact on Danielle's mother's attitude towards her and her mother Terri. For example, on page 264, Danielle says, "... I got down to the lobby and saw everyone - Mom, Charlie, Anna, and Terri. Was Charlie with Mom or Terri? Oh boy, I thought. But things worked out. Mom shook Terri's hand and accepted her invitation for coffee...".

Anna was showing fortitude, or being courageous and persevering through hard times, such as when Mr. Terupt was in the hospital. She was always the positive one who would assure everyone else that Mr. Terupt was ok. For example, on page 230, Anna says, “He’s going to make it. Trust me on this one. Be positive. Mr. Terupt told me that once, and he was right.”

  4. Anna would have to be my favorite character in the book. This is because in the end, she really showed us that she was kind, confident, and happy. For instance, on page 260 she says, “‘See you soon, Mr. Terupt,’ I said. I ran over and gave him another quick hug. ‘Have a good summer.’” Then it says, “‘You too, Anna,’ He (Mr. Terupt) said. ‘And Mr. Terupt.’ I (Anna) looked up at him and he looked down at me. ‘I think Ms. Newberry might have the hots for you, in case you’re interested.’ I smiled. He smiled back. ‘Matchmaker Anna. Thanks for the tip.’” This is just one of the many examples that shows how Anna is happy and confident when interacting with other characters. This particular scenario shows how Anna is confident and happy because when she talks to Mr. Terupt, she does it with confidence, and mentions some pretty funny topics.

Anna changes and grows throughout the year in many ways, but the main way she changes is in her confidence. For example, in the beginning of the book, Anna was always shy, but towards the end, she really tried to be confident in everything she did. For example, on page 19 Anna says, “I didn’t say much in school, and I never raised my hand. That would have been an easy way for people to notice me, and I didn’t want to be noticed.” This quote shows that at the beginning of the school year, Anna would never really try to stand out, and would always try to be as hidden from everyone else as she could be. However, throughout the rest of the book, she changed her ways. For example, on page 261 it says, “‘Hi guys,’ I said. ‘Are you here to pick up Danielle, too? She’s still upstairs.’ I barely got those words out of my mouth before I saw the answer to my question. Danielle’s mother walked into the lobby. She spotted us right away. ‘Hi, Mrs. Roberts,’ I said, finding no small amount of courage. ‘Would you like me to get Danielle for you?’” These quotes show that toward the end of the book, Anna had grown a lot in terms of confidence. This is because when talking to different characters - especially characters such as Danielle’s mother - Anna had complete confidence and did not shy away.

Throughout the book, Anna demonstrated fortitude the most. This is because as I mentioned before, in the beginning of the story she was shy, but towards the end, with a lot of courage, she became confident. For instance, on page 95 she says, “One day during recess—while doing some stick sketching in the dirt—I took a deep breath and plunged ahead. ‘Would you guys like to come over to my house for a playdate?’ I asked Jessica and Danielle.” Another example of Anna demonstrating fortitude is on page 233, when she says, “The waiting room slowly emptied. Next thing I knew, my mom and I were sitting directly across from Danielle and her mother with hardly anyone else around. I felt uneasy, knowing her mother hated us, but I took a chance. ‘Danielle, can we pray with you?’ I asked.” These two quotes show that from Anna’s transition from shy to confident, there were many points in which she had to express fortitude, and really try her best to not be too hesitant or afraid in the things she had to do.

  6. My favorite character throughout the book was Peter, and I have many reasons why. I know you all probably think that I liked him because he was a trouble maker, but this is not the case. Peter made us laugh throughout the story but also changed. He hadn't showed any virtues in the first half of the book. This is because he behaved inappropriately towards teachers and his peers. It's very sad that it took an innocent person to go into a coma to make him realize what he had done, but Peter clearly felt bad for what he had done. He showed temperance towards the end by apologizing and maintaining his control. I really enjoyed this book!

    1. Hi Brian,

I myself don't very like Peter he did very bad things to a lot of people like when he threw a Frisbee at Alexia's butt that was not kind though I do agree with you about how Peter didn't show any virtue through the first half of the book I liked how you used events that happened throughout the book Keep up the good work!
